Security Maintenance — Why It Matters

It’s a common misconception. Once a security system is installed, that’s it. You’re protected against criminal activity.

In fact, without regular maintenance, even the best security systems will be compromised. So, in this article, we’re looking at security maintenance — why it’s important, and the most common maintenance issues you’re likely to face.

Why is security maintenance important?

Like any other equipment in everyday use, security systems are subject to wear and tear. However, the consequences of this are sometimes hard to spot.

It could be that an external CCTV camera has been adversely affected by the weather, or an alarm sensor has come loose. Your perimeter fencing could be several years old and considerably less robust than you think it is.

You might not notice that something is broken until the worst happens and an intruder gains access. Unfortunately, if that’s down to poor maintenance, serious problems kick in. You probably won’t be insured.

Insurance compliance

Most insurance companies ask for evidence that security systems have been maintained in line with specific standards.

Regular maintenance is an important element of insurance compliance requirements. If there’s failure to comply, the insurer will be discharged from liability. They’re unlikely to pay out.

CCTV maintenance

CCTV works quietly in the background day after day, year after year. Once installed, it’s easy to leave it alone and assume everything is working as it should.

The problem is, should any of its components fail, the system won’t function properly. The cameras will be unable to capture images and evidence won’t be recorded. The most common issues with CCTV are these:

  • Loose connections and faulty wiring
  • Dirty, obstructed or poorly positioned cameras
  • Weather interference
  • Unstable power supply
  • Dust in the recorder fans
  • Hard drive failure
  • Out-of-date firmware

Troubleshooting modern CCTV systems can be a complex, daunting prospect for many people. The safest, most risk-free solution is to ask a qualified engineer to service it at least once a year.

Alarm system maintenance

Like CCTV, your alarm system is a crucial first line of defence against unwanted intruders. If it breaks down, your property will be vulnerable.

Equally, an unmaintained alarm system can trigger repeated false alarms. As with the boy who cried `wolf’, multiple false positives can lead to a genuine threat being ignored.

The most common alarm system maintenance issues are these:

  • Wear and tear on the alarm sensors
  • Loose wiring and connectivity problems
  • Battery and power issues
  • Incorrect sensor calibration
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Outdated software
  • Interference from nearby devices

While some issues are easy to deal with — replacing batteries, for instance — others will be too complex for a DIY fix. Modern alarm systems are intricate networks of connected functionality. Adjusting one feature can adversely affect another.

Again, it’s worth having your alarm system inspected and serviced at least once a year by a qualified professional.

Preventative maintenance

When it comes to security, prevention is always better than cure. Regular checks will help you pinpoint any gaps in security before they’re breached.

Start with the boundaries of y

our property — its perimeter fences and walls. For example, are your fences high enough? UK police forces recommend a minimum height of 2.1 metres to prevent anyone climbing over them.

Then work inwards from the boundaries. Criminals are on the lookout for any vulnerabilities between the perimeter, outbuildings and the main part of the property.
Intruders love the dark, so consider installing motion sensor lighting in any areas which are dimly lit.

Roof, windows and litter

Don’t forget the roof, especially if your property is vacant. Poorly maintained roofs are a common entry point for squatters and trespassers. It’s also worth locking away any items which could be used as a climbing aide.Finally, make sure all external areas are cleared of litter and the building itself looks well maintained. The Broken Windows Theory is worth keeping in mind:
